hello, can you hear us?

Hi!
You’re receiving this because sometime in the past few months you filled out one of our cosplay surveys or signed up through our website, where you could leave your contact details - including your email address.
This newsletter is our way of updating you on our progress in creating a dedicated social media platform for cosplay - cos.place! If this is the first newsletter you see, you can catch up with our previous issues here.

If you’d like to opt out of getting further updates related to our work on cos.place, you can unsubscribe by clicking here.

Here’s what happened since our last meeting:

  • We attended the Remcon Festival!! It was not only an insane amount of fun but also a massive success for cos.place. We’ve had the chance to talk with you about our project and your expectations of our work, established many friendly relationships, as well as welcomed 30 new cos.pals. Hello, we’re really glad you’re here with us!
  • We got in touch with organizers behind cons all across Poland. Even though we’re still in the early stages of discussions, we have a very good feeling about all of them!
  • We’ve crossed the threshold of over 200 registered users!!! Where did ya’ll come from???
  • During February we’ve doubled both our total follower count across our social media, as well as people signed up for our newsletter O_O!
  • We’ve launched our Discord server! And active and direct communication with you is a major priority for us, so we hope this space will help us achieve that :) You can join us now via cos.place or using the link cos.place/discord.

the innate fear...

Humankind got dealt a harsh hand when it comes to dealing with predators. Our ancestors were a yummy meal, and so they were forced to battle all kinds of bloodthirsty monsters - lions down in Africa, tigers in Asia, and... other big cats...
Anyway, somewhere in the past humans had conquered the wild, wild nature and for a short while we’ve had some blissful peace. Nature though, oh it does not much like unfilled niches and thus appeared our new nemesis - the Algorithm.
At least that’s how it may seem when we listen to the way online creators speak about it. It appears that those digital nomads have no other choice but to rely entirely on the algorithm’s mercy. It - seemingly guided only by its whims - devours them, elevating only a small handful to great heights. Please, let us take a moment to honor the memory of those who have fallen in the fight against this Monster.

This outview on the algorithm is held by a decisive majority of the cosplayers that had answered our surveys in 2025:

  • 78% at least once felt like it purposefully cuts their reach
  • 93% feel that their posts have much smaller reach than they should
  • 67% feel a great pressure to post just so they don’t lose their reach
  • 95% say that in their view the algorithm does not work as intended

Those feelings are amplified by the fact that outside of the massive amount of work needed to be a cosplayer, managing social media accounts is equally as time consuming.
According to our surveys:

  • 48% spend at least a day on either planning or preparing each posts, of which:
    • 33% spend at least a day on planning alone
    • 41% spend at least a day on preparation alone
    • 26% spend at least a day on each
  • 42% spend three or more days on either planning or preparing each posts, of which:
    • 26% spend at least a day on planning alone
    • 26% spend at least a day on preparation alone
    • 11% spend at least a day on each
  • 22% spend at least a week on either planning or preparing each post
  • 4% spend at least a week on planning and then at least an additional week on preparing each post

It doesn’t seem surprising to us at all that cosplayers’ overall satisfaction with the platform they post on the most is so low. As much as 66% rate their satisfaction as mediocre or worse.

To sum it up dramatically: relation with the algorithm is like a battle with a wild beast; to sum up less dramatically - like fighting windmills; and to sum up in normal people’s terms - like dating an overtly nonchalant guy.

and how to tame it!

The most important question: Is it in the algorithm’s nature to be a beast, or maybe it’s simply the result of modern day social media? That is a deeply philosophically loaded question and surely we could ponder it for a really long time, but this thread is slowly running stale.
The same way in which the ancients have tamed the beasts of their time to help them in their daily life, we’re aiming to tame the algorithm to support creators. To achieve this we’ve established a set of rules that our algorithm will adhere to. They’re put in place to help shape our platform in such a way as to protect creators against pressure of going viral and creative burnout, as well as helping browsing users with easier access to their favorite content.
Cos.place’s algorithm will:

  • Promote new users
  • Promote novice cosplayers
  • Promote cosplayers that tag other creators in their posts
  • Show content chronologically
  • Show content similar to one browsed by the users in the past
  • Show different content occasionally as to not close our users in separate bubbles
  • Treat posts of all users equally, regardless of posting frequency

Additionally, cos.place’s content feed will have four subcategories:

  • "For you" - serving mainly content based on user’s previous preferences
  • "Followed" - serving content only from followed creators
  • "Fresh" - serving the latest posts chronologically
  • "Popular" - serving the most popular content in the chosen timespan

We hope that these efforts will allow creators to focus on pursuing their passion. Small and young creators will encounter less resistance at the beginning of their career, while seasoned veterans will be able to focus on their more advanced projects without fear of losing their reach. Over time we’ll be updating our algorithm to make it even more user-friendly! If you have any suggestions for the things we should focus on, be sure to let us know over at contact@cos.place or on our Discord server!
